Endodontics is a type of dentistry that specializes in saving teeth and focuses on the root or soft tissue pulp portion of the tooth. Zen Smiles Miami not only offers cosmetic and general dentistry, but they also provide endodontic care!

Is there a difference between a dentist and endodontist?

Following dental school, an endodontist completes two more years of advanced training that include standard root canals and other  procedures related to a host dental traumas. Because endodontists are highly skilled at saving a tooth as a result of their training, they can implement specific techniques that benefit their patients.

Why is important to save a tooth?

In the inception of dental care, it was standard practice to remove an infected or diseased tooth, but with endodontics, it’s tooth-sparing. When your natural teeth remain intact, you’re able to eat and drink with ease and don’t have to undergo other dental procedures.

When should I see an endodontist?

Going to the dentist, especially when you have pain, can cause anxiety but it’s important to get your pain diagnosed. Schedule an appointment if you’re experiencing:

  • Any tooth pain.
  • Your tooth was injured
  • You have extreme swelling.
  • You more sensitive to hot and cold extremes.

When is an endodontic procedure needed?

An endodontic procedure — most commonly a root canal — is needed when there is an infection or inflammation at the root of the tooth causing pain. The tooth itself may become decayed which results in an inflamed and infected root pulp, that ultimately surfaces as an abscess deep at the base of the tooth.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is an endodontic procedure where the infected and inflamed tooth pulp is attentively removed from within. The specialist then cleans and disinfects the space and fills the tooth, covering the site.
